One thing that is always good to do as a photographer is challenge yourself and put yourself in conditions where you don’t feel comfortable. It’s easy if you shoot the same thing all the time to get in a routine where you settle for doing the same thing time and time again but you don’t improve as a photographer that way. One common thing that all successful photographers have is that they are able to excel in any situation that they are put in and I try to do that each time I head out with my camera.

I’ve never shot a Formula Drift event so when I saw that they had a race going on the same weekend I would be up in Seattle for the NHRA event, I jumped at the opportunity to snap some frames off at their practice on Thursday. Their schedules the rest of the week were pretty much identical so I’d only have a few hours to shoot there while I was busy shooting drag racing.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from the practice on Thursday. I had a good time out there and hope to make it back to more Formula Drift events in the future. Big thanks goes out to my buddies Larry Chen and Louis Yio for showing me the ropes real quick and explaining how it all works.

This is what the tire look like just after a few hot laps around the track.

One thing I noticed on NOS Energy driver Chris Forsberg’s rear fender was holes cut out which made for some cool effects with the tire smoke.

For most of the practice drivers went on single runs but towards the end they started going two at a time like they do in the main events which let me get some different photos.

The goal of the chase car is to get as close as possible to the lead car, sometimes that doesn’t work out quite as planned.

One of the nice things about shooting Formula D is that they give you plenty of access to get close but safe to the vehicles.

Loved seeing how the tire smoke for each car has its own unique pattern leaving the tires.
